One of the most important extractions was conducted in 1990 by the Center for Archaeological Investigations of the UPR (University of Puerto Rico). The investigations led to the recovery of the remains of a human who, according to scientific studies, lived in that area more than 4,000 years ago. These remains are until today known as the oldest in the Caribbean, and are known as “El Hombre de Puerto Ferro,” The Man from Puerto Ferro.

All guests must be at the Resort main entrance 10 minutes prior to the tour.
Snorkeling and Scuba Tours
Are available through local dive shops. Martineau Bay is probably the only resort in Puerto Rico with good snorkeling right off the beach at the hotel. Scuba dive trips are made to world-class sites off shore. Day trips for snorkelers on large catamarans have proven very popular with guests, and especially among groups.
Food and beverages and all snorkeling gear are provided and the guests get to enjoy a day sail around Vieques. The waters of Vieques are very much of Caribbean quality and clarity so snorkeling and deep water diving are particularly enjoyable.
Fisherman will have many options to choose from:
Salt Water fly Fishing, Deep Sea Fishing, and Shore Casting
Is all offered on Vieques. Capt. Franco offers fishing charters on his 28’ Bertram and his personal favorite, salt-water fly-fishing. All gear plus his expertise and local knowledge of special spots is provided. There are numerous locations for shore casting. Located near the hotel is Rompeolas (Mosquito Pier) a one mile long jetty that is a favorite fishing spot, especially for night fishing.
A variety of Boat Charters options are available for individuals or groups. Day charters on sail boats, power boats, power or sail catamarans may be arranged through the DMC or the Tour & Travel Desk. With the Caribbean’s largest marina, Puerto del Rey, located 8 miles away, for larger outings there are charter boats from mainland Puerto Rico are readily available.
Jeep Rentals
Available through several agencies on the island including one directly outside the gates of the hotel. For those who wish to get out and discover some of the 40 plus beaches on Vieques a Jeep is an ideal mode of transportation.
All attractions, restaurants and bars are near the hotel so taxi transportation via 12 passenger vans is a cost effective option.
Beach Discovery Tours
Are a favorite past time for tourists and locals alike.
Everyone seems to have a favorite beach but is always out to discover new ones. With the former US Navy land now under the control of US Fish & Wildlife there are now countless pristine beaches available to explore and enjoy. One beach discovery option is to rent a jeep, pack a picnic basket from the hotel, get a good map, and have someone point you in the direction of a beach he heard about from a friend of a friend. Guided beach tours are offered by motor vehicle, but to get to those special places we recommend going by horseback, mountain bike, or ocean kayak.
Vieques is one of the few places in the Caribbean where you can spend the day on a white sand beach and at the end of the day the only footprints on the sand will be yours.
Horseback Riding
Is offered locally by a wonderful lady who rescued the horses and offers riding tours as a source of funds to feed and maintain them. Tours may be arranged by the Tour & Travel Desk.
Ocean Kayaking
Has become a form of transportation of choice for adventure travel aficionados. There are companies who rent kayaks for use on other parts of the island, and who conduct tours of beaches, mangroves, and other areas of interest and night tours of the Bio-Bay.
Mountain Biking
Tours are offered of mountain trails, hidden beaches, and even an archeological site they refer to as the Vieques Stonehenge. They offer perhaps one of the best ways to explore some of the 16,000 acres of wildlife preserve lands now under the protection of US Fish & Wildlife. They promise to bring you back with mud on your face and a big smile.
Museum and City
Tours are available by tour guides or can be conducted on your own. The main attractions in the town of Isabel II include the Count Mirasol Fort, the Lighthouse Museum (there are 2 working lighthouses on Vieques), and the Siddhia Hutchinson art gallery.
The Count Mirasol Fort and Museum is a must see. It’s a beautifully restored Spanish fort (the last constructed in the New World) and a museum that passionately and effectively reflects the history and culture of Vieques and its people. There are exhibits of historical, archeological and architectural artifacts, and for sale in the gift shop is art and handicrafts by local artisans. The grounds are available for group functions.
The Lighthouse Museum is housed in a working lighthouse overlooking the harbor of Isabella II. Exhibits include archeological artifacts from Indian tribes which inhabited the island prior to European settlement, old coins and stamps, and other historical items of interest. There is a function area on the grounds available for group events.
Siddhia Hutchinson is one of several exceptionally gifted artists who lives and works in Vieques. In her gallery you will find not only paintings and prints but also tapestries and porcelain pieces based on her designs. You will most certainly find works of art in her gallery that will keep the memory of your time in Vieques a fresh and fond memory, or gifts for valued friends and family members. Isabella II is also the site of the ferry landing, the local branch of Banco Popular, the US Post Office, the pharmacy, the town square (Plaza), a beautiful Catholic Church, a couple of excellent restaurants and popular bars, and a bakery with great breads and sandwiches.
La Casa Vieja, the other art gallery in Vieques has works by local artists as well as those from the United States and Europe. The quality of the works is outstanding. This gallery is a short distance from the hotel. The layout features a large patio between the gallery and the workshop that is ideal for catered events.
Esperanza, the other island city, is on the opposite side of the island and is the type of beach community you fall in love with immediately. The paved walk (Malecon) along the beach is where you go to watch the boats in the bay, the beautiful sunsets, or to decide which of the restaurant/bars located across the street will be your first stop.
The Nature Trust has a museum on the strip that’s another must see for those who enjoy nature, history, archeology, art and handicrafts. It’s nothing fancy… it’s almost like someone’s science project… but it oozes with the passion and love of the dedicated volunteers who are constantly bringing in new exhibits and caring for the museum. It’s a celebration of the love they feel for the island of Vieques and nature. Along the Malecon are several wonderful restaurants and bars mentioned earlier that are popular with residents and tourists alike. They are the type of places where you stop in for a beer or soft drink, start talking and begin making friends, end up having lunch or dinner or both, for the rest of your time on the island you keep running into your newly made friends, and the bar tender and you start exchanging Christmas cards. Esperanza also has a couple of shops where you can get the latest fashions (shorts, sun dresses, T-shirts) plus local handicrafts and art. All in all, Esperanza is a great place to spend a day or night.
